Helping Young Artists Find Their Voice
Welcome to Astarart
Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. From working as a Creative Director in the advertising industry to spending the last 20 years tutoring Art and Design, creativity has always been at the centre of who I am.
Astarart was created from a real passion for helping young people grow in confidence, develop strong technical skills, and discover their own artistic voice.
One of the things I love most about teaching art is that no two students are ever the same. Every student arrives with different strengths, ideas, interests, and ways of seeing the world. Some are naturally confident. Others need support rebuilding belief in themselves. Some love drawing straight away, while others take time to find the medium that unlocks their creativity.
That journey is what makes teaching so rewarding.
I work across GCSE and A Level Fine Art, Graphics, and Photography, supporting students through all exam boards while helping them meet the specific criteria required by their schools. But for me, great art education is never just about ticking boxes. It’s about learning how to think creatively, solve problems visually, experiment with confidence, and build the skills needed to express ideas in a personal and meaningful way.
Strong drawing and tonal skills are always at the heart of what I teach. Once students understand those foundations, everything else begins to open up — painting, composition, colour, photography, mixed media, sketchbook development, and personal style.
I also understand that creative subjects can sometimes feel overwhelming. Exam pressure, self doubt, comparison, and fear of getting things wrong can stop students from enjoying the very thing they once loved. That’s why creating a supportive environment matters so much to me. Alongside teaching technical skills, I aim to help students feel encouraged, motivated, and proud of their progress.
Art should feel exciting. Challenging at times, yes, but also freeing, expressive, and deeply personal.
This blog will be a place where I share ideas, advice, creative inspiration, sketchbook tips, materials, techniques, student guidance, and behind the scenes glimpses into both teaching and my own artistic practice.
Thank you for being here at the beginning of the Astarart journey.
Julie
